Why Dramione Fanfic is Taking Over and Going Mainstream

Dramione fanfic is going mainstream with three Dramione-inspired works set to be published soon.

Popular Dramione fanfic

Fanfiction was once seen as a bit of a strange corner of the internet. But ever since Fifty Shades of Grey exposed the world of fanfic in a way no one saw coming, it has been far more socially acceptable to admit you enjoy fanfic. And why not? There is some great fanfiction out there, written by some extremely talented people.

However, one fandom has really captured people’s imaginations, and it’s getting more popular by the day. Dramione- aka Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger is the fanfic trope that isn’t going anywhere any time soon. In fact, in the summer of 2025, three novels which started as Dramione fanfic are set to be traditionally published! Great news if you’re a Dramione fan.

So why has fanfiction become more mainstream? And what is it about Dramione fanfic, in particular, that has captured people’s hearts and minds? Let’s take a look at the world of Dramione fanfic and the three books that will be hitting shelves in a matter of months.

The Enduring Popularity of Dramione Fanfic

The Dramione fandom—centred around the pairing of Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger—has exploded in popularity over the years. The fandom is dominating fan fiction platforms like AO3 and Wattpad. What is it about this pairing that captivates readers so much?

Despite hating each other’s guts in the original Harry Potter series, the Dramione ship is huge. Their contrast in personalities, the “enemies-to-lovers” dynamic, and the endless possibilities for redemption and character growth make Dramione a writer’s dream. The trope explores forbidden romance, class tensions, and the transformation of prejudice into love. All of which make for dramatic and emotionally charged storytelling.

If we’re being honest, though, it’s the spicy opportunities that really draw readers in. Most Dramione fanfics have high levels of spice, but that’s not to say they don’t have a good plot to boot. In fact, one popular Dramione fanfic—Damaged Goods by Slytherin After Dark—even leans into this idea by using the tagline “come for the smut, stay for the plot” to hook readers in.

Dramione-Coded Works of Fiction

That being said, Dramione fanfic isn’t for everyone. Although the stories feature adult versions of Draco and Hermione, when you grew up with Harry Potter, it can be hard to see those characters differently from how they were presented in the books and films. Especially when the stories use all the same characters and similar or the same universe.

Enter Dramione-coded works of fiction. Now, fanfiction cannot be traditionally published because it uses ideas, worlds and characters created by someone else. To publish and sell fanfic would be a huge infringement of copyright and, therefore, illegal. But fan fiction can be reworked into a new story by keeping the basic principles but stripping away everything that connects it to its fandom. What you’re left with is a brand-new work of fiction based on the Dramione ship but without any of the stuff that would get the writer sued.

For people who want to enjoy the stories these writers have created without spoiling the Harry Potter universe for themselves, it’s the perfect compromise. Luckily for Dramione fans, three Dramione-coded novels are set to be traditionally published this summer!

Dramione Fanfic Coming In Summer 2025

This summer, three books that started as Dramione fanfiction will be hitting bookshelves in their newly revised and original forms. Each of these novels began as stories about Draco and Hermione before being transformed into original works with unique settings and characters:

Alchemised by SenLinYu

“Once a promising alchemist, Helena Marino is now a prisoner—of war and of her own mind. Her Resistance friends and allies have been brutally murdered, her abilities suppressed, and the world she knew destroyed.

In the aftermath of a long war, Paladia’s new ruling class of corrupt guild families and depraved necromancers, whose vile, undead creatures helped bring about their victory, holds Helena captive.

According to Resistance records, she was a healer of little importance within their ranks. But Helena has inexplicable memory loss of the months leading up to her capture, making her enemies wonder: Is she truly as insignificant as she appears, or are her lost memories hiding some vital piece of the Resistance’s final gambit?

To uncover the memories buried deep within her mind, Helena is sent to the High Reeve, one of the most powerful and ruthless necromancers in this new world. Trapped on his crumbling estate, Helena’s fight—to protect her lost history and to preserve the last remaining shreds of her former self—is just beginning. For her prison and captor have secrets of their own . . . secrets Helena must unearth, whatever the cost.”

Alchemised is based on what has to be one of the most popular Dramione fanfics- Manacled. Described as a cross-over between Harry Potter and The Handmaid’s Tale, Manacled is a dark Dramione story. As Alchemised is a direct reworking of Manacled, this fanfic has now been removed from all platforms.

Alchemised is set to be published on the 30th of September 2025.

Rose in Chains by Julie Soto

“Captured as her castle is overrun by the enemy, Princess Briony Rosewood is stripped of her magic and auctioned off to the highest bidder.

She’s sold to Toven Hearst: scion of a family known for their cruel control of magic – and her long-time, and unresolved, infatuation. Yet despite the horrors of her new world and the role she must learn to play within it, all is not lost.

Help – and hope – may yet arise in the most unlikely of places…”

Rose in Chains is based on the Dramione fanfic The Auction. As this is a direct reworking, this fanfic has now been removed from all platforms.

Rose in Chains is set to be published on the 3rd of July 2025.

The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley

“Osric Mordaunt, member of the Fyren Order of assassins, is in dire need of healing. Naturally – such is the grim comedy of fate – the only healer who can help is Aurienne Fairhrim, preeminent scientist, bastion of moral good, and member of an enemy Order.

Aurienne is desperate for funding to heal the sick – so desperate that, when Osric bribes her to help him, she accepts, even if she detests him and everything he stands for.

A forced collaboration ensues: the brilliant Woman in STEM is coerced into working with the PhD in Murders, much to Aurienne’s disgust. As Osric and Aurienne work together to heal his illness and investigate the mysterious reoccurrence of a deadly pox, they find themselves ardently denying their attraction, which only fuels the heat between them.”

The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy is a little different from the other two Dramione fanfics. It is a completely new original piece of work. However, you only have to look at the cover to see just how Dramione-coded this is going to be! Brigitte wrote the popular Dramione fanfic Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love under the name isthisselfcare. While The Irresistible Urge borrows tropes from this story, it isn’t the same. This means Mortifying is actually still available in AO3 for you to read!

The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy is set to be published on the 8th of July 2025.

Each of these books retains the essence of what made their original Dramione fanfictions so compelling while offering a fresh take that makes them accessible to a broader audience.

Why is Fanfiction Becoming More Mainstream?

Fanfiction, once a niche corner of the internet, is now at the forefront of mainstream publishing. Once considered derivative or amateur writing, it is now widely acknowledged as a legitimate form of storytelling and a breeding ground for talented authors.

The success of books that originated as fanfiction—such as Fifty Shades of Grey (originally a Twilight fanfic) and The Love Hypothesis (which started as Reylo fanfiction)—has shown that these stories have an audience far beyond their original fandoms.

Social media platforms like TikTok, particularly BookTok, have played a massive role in normalizing and even celebrating fanfiction. Readers now openly discuss and recommend their favourite fics.

With so much Dramione fanfic being pulled to publish, I think we’ll see a lot more fanfic being traditionally published over the next few years. The Dramione fandom and others are set to be in for a treat.

What This Means for the Future of Fanfiction

The rise of Dramione fanfic and the success of fanfic-based novels signal an ongoing shift in how fanfiction is perceived. It’s no longer just a hobby for devoted fans—it’s a legitimate stepping stone to professional publishing. With major publishers embracing stories that originated in fandom spaces, we can expect to see even more books that blur the line between fanfiction and traditional literature.

Personally, I think this is a fantastic move. Not only does it give people a shot at being a traditionally published author, but it also keeps audiences happy. Those who wish to stay in the fanfic world usually have plenty of notice when a fanfic is set to be pulled. Manacled, for example, had a fair few months’ warning before it was removed from AO3. This gives people who want to read the original works a chance to download it and do so. I highly recommend immersing yourself in BookTok tags and Reddit to find out when works will be pulled.

However, if you like the plot of a story but can’t quite get on board with fanfic using the same characters and worlds you’ve become used to, then the reworked, traditionally published novels are a great opportunity to experience the story without it featuring characters you already know!

Final Thoughts

The success of these upcoming books proves that readers crave passionate, well-developed, and emotionally intense storytelling—something the Dramione fandom has long perfected. As social media continues to amplify fan works, we may be entering a golden age of fanfiction-inspired fiction. The buzz around these three books is already huge. I can see this paving the way for more pulled-to-publish fanfics.

What are your thoughts? Are you a Dramione fanfic lover, or are you new to the pairing? Will you be picking up any of these books when they hit the shelves? Let’s discuss in the comments!
